Just a quick hello!

I apologize to those people who have been constantly checking this blog for a new chapter update on The Moon That Embraces the Sun.

One, I’ve been working some crazy hours at work. And two, like many others, I’ve been taken by the “Linsanity” storm these days. It doesn’t help (or does it?) that I have the hots for the man himself – Jeremy Lin. Yes, I’ve watched every single one of his interviews and the more I learn about him, the more I’m impressed. But seriously, I really need to stop crushing on younger men!

Finally, I must confess… (Or would it be considered a blasphemy here?) I find the tv drama version of The Moon That Embraces the Sun… (gasp!) boring. How is this possible with all these younger men roaming around, and we all know that they are my greatest weakness?  But the unthinkable has happened, and well, I’m just not impressed. Alas, I’m at least two weeks behind. So, has it picked up lately or is it still going at a snail pace?

But don’t worry. For the fans of the novel, a new chapter update should be coming soon!

Hey, you’re back. Sort of. :) Glad to know you’ve just been really busy and not because you got sick or something. :) Thundie got truck with Linsanity, too. Lol. Aigoo, MoonSun just proves that thing we say after we watch movie adaptations: “The book was better.” Have you tried checking out Shut Up Flower Boy Band? I know it’s a horrible title but I promise, there’s so much good stuff in it. And you’re a musicphile, right? A member of Loveholic is the show’s music director, and Lee Min Ki and KimC are some of the stars making extended cameos. Oh, and did I mention there’s oodles of bromance as well? *giggles*

Ooh, I haven’t caught SUFBB yet, but it sounds interesting. I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for the rec!!

Wasn’t sure when you’d be checking out this post again but I’m glad you’re gonna give SUFBB a try. I am now on full-on crack mode about it and the OST has been stuck in my head for weeks now. Ah, well.

The reason I’m replying actually is that I checked back in on MoonSun because I’d been hearing it got better in the latter episodes. I’m all caught up and I admit, it DID get better, if only for a little bit. At the very least, my attention doesn’t wander anymore when I watch it. More importantly, and this is why I’m writing is that I want to thank you for your wonderfully educational Honorifics post. Yeah, that was a weird segue way but when I read it the first time, I wasn’t able to thank you for the language lesson and I really should have when I realized, as I was watching MoonSun, how I TOTALLY noticed the shift in how Hwon addresses Wol and how he addresses Yeon Woo. And I was amazed at its implications.

Back when he knew her as the lowly shaman Wol, he addressed her exclusively in haerache, in much the same manner as he addresses his servants (or basically everyone else since he’s king). He only used hapsyoche to address his Grandma, Mom, and Yangmyung, which I’m guessing is because they’re older than him in the same family? With Queen Bo-kyung, however, I noticed he addressed her exclusively in haoche, and this is where it gets interesting, at least for me. In your words, it’s used “when addressing those in the same rank as yourself or lower . . . but speaking up and giving the addressee a moderate degree of respect/politeness.” I figured that moderate degree of respect/politeness was because she was his wife, and maybe that’s just how kings addressed their queens. So imagine my utter delight and surprise, when *SPOILER* Hwon meets Wol again after finding out she’s Yeon Woo *END SPOILER*, and his manner of speaking to her totally changes from haerache to haoche. This was so nerdy and geeky of me but I SWOONED at the implications of the change in speech because now I’m thinking he’s not speaking to his servant anymore, but to his queen. From this point on, the mediocre drama that was trying so hard to inject some sort of chemistry in their leads actually did become quite romantic, at least for me. So thank you for the language lesson, Blue. Once again, you have managed to turn a less than stellar drama (like YFFM before), into something quite memorable and poignant that I’m willing to see through the end. Bravo! (and apologies for the long rambling post :) )

Oh wow, that is so cool that you were able to pick up on all the different speech levels used in METS! I’m glad to have helped!

And oh my gosh, you (along with others who recommended SUFBB) opened up a can of worms by recommending that show to me. I stayed awake till 5 am on Saturday morning to catch up on ALL 10 episodes. I’m totally obsessed about that show right now, and guess what I did as soon as I came home from work on Monday night? Yup, watch episode 11! Honestly, the story is not as interesting in the more recent episodes, but it doesn’t even matter to me anymore because I’m so invested in these awesomely written characters! Thanks for the recommendation!

Glad you’re back! No worries, crazy life and all is something I can relate to.

Hmmm, MoonSun, like you said, got very very boring. Story trundled around in circles, Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Min Seo trampled all over everyone else, pretty butterflies flew around to add to the action.

But. Episode 14 recently gave a very nice upturn. Major twist, stakes cranked up, and (if you can believe it) Han Ga In gave me goosebumps in one scene. I don’t think the scriptwriter is as good as the novelist, but I was one episode away from dropping the drama and now I’m glad I didn’t. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this week – I recommend just reading the recaps on Dramabeans until episode 13 and watching from there.

  6. bogorsae

i’m right there with you.. i find moon/sun drama suddenly boring but i can’t forget my initial excitement of the drama.

My opinion is that the pacing got slower so my interest slows.
now, i’m planning just to read recaps then marathon the remaining episode when its over.

  7. Bea

I’m really looking forward to chapter 7. I hope to read it soon. :)

  8. AnaPinay

Blue, thank you so much!! Looking forward to the next chapter of TMETS. and yes, if you have anything to write abt Jeremy Lin it would be really great. I do admired and like this humble and very talented asian basketball player. He got all the moves and the brains too match with his good and well rounded behaviour of youth today. I hope Linsanity syndrome would passed along our teens today!!! i mean he was able to get into Harvard and NBA at a young age hope that would be a good role model for other youngters to follow.
More power again and we’ll keep dropping in and out of your very well read website. God bless you and your family.

  9. techvet

Blue, so glad to hear that you are well. My husband got the Linsanity bug as well. Looking forward to reading more of your beautiful translations. If you aren’t already, I strongly recommend reading okoala’s chapter by chapter english translation of the chinese novel, Da Mo Yao, at koalasplayground.com. Talk about a well written love triangle of sorts. Over and out.

  10. Ace

Heard about Linsanity but haven’t caught it yet. I’m also impressed because he’s different from most pro-athletes out there (big egos anyone?).

Been waiting for the next chapter of your Moon/Sun update because I’m one of those bored with the drama despite KSH & KMS’ great acting, and the latest development in Wol’s character. HGI makes me want to headdesk constantly though I must admit that she has some moments in last night’s episodes that almost, almost, almost makes me think she’s got some expression in her eyes. But it was too fleeting so I’m still not sure. And I’m not watching it again to make sure. ;) Maybe if they stuck to the book and offered more skinship… Anyway, the scriptwriter sucks that’s for sure. SKKS could’ve been boring but thank goodness for the other characters that made it interesting. TMTETS’ secondary characters are just so one-dimensional.

I’m seconding the post above recommending Shut Up: Flower Boy Band. That, and History of the Salary Man are the current dramas worth watching.

  11. goldenflower

I’ve been googling and youtubing Jeremy Lin for quite a while now too! I’m glad you’re on the same page! =) He has such an amazing story and he is also such an inspiration and *crush*ahem*other* to us all.

I’m on board with everyone recommending Shut Up: Flower Boy Band. It feels so real, yet so surreal, and Sung Joon is acting the heck out of his role. He is Ji-Hyuk with just the right amount of teenage, confidence, insecurity …. man. ALSO, the music is phenomenal.

Study hard, and hope to read your updates soon.

Welcome back! Even if I die waiting for the next chapters of the book, I know it’s worth waiting for. Yes, the drama lost the line of the story, the beauty of the first episodes, they dragged the story till killing it, and now they try to resurrect (too late for me, i keep watching it only with subs, and only parts that seems interesting after reading the recaps on JB). HGI has no clue how to play this role and with just 2-3 moments of good cryings it doesn’t convince me at all.

    Be happy!

I didn’t follow basketball and jeremy lin. But I read on newspaper that he will play NBA all star or something.. so I’m curious about him. Last NBA famous player from China is Yao Ming and I read that he follow Yao Ming path.

So, if you whom kdrama addict can be pulled from kdramaland by him, so he must be
    something/someone special. :)

ps. I almost got heart attack when your header come up. My internet is little bit slow, so first thing came up from your blog is your header. And Joo Won popped up with his thousand watts smile and cute dimple!
Whoaaa… Thank you.. you’ve made my day.. :)

    1. dee

      *palmface*
Oh My God! He is not like Yao Ming. He was born on Los Angeles. And I read on wikipedia, he is Harvard graduate. Wow!

We have KSH and JIW forgodsake! My both favactors! But I just cant get into the stories. I still keep up with softy’s transcaps tho, but this week, I’m totally not into.
